The Melville Advance named Best Overall newspaper

April 21, 2010

For the second time in three years The Melville Advance has been claimed Best Overall Paper by the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association (SWNA).
The Advance, which won the title in 2008 as well, topped the Class B category for newspapers with circulations between 2,001 and 3,499.
The award was presented at the SWNA 2010 annual convention on the weekend in Regina. The SWNA boasts a membership of 86 newspapers throughout the province.
“We’re extremely pleased our work has been recognized by our peers,” says Publisher/Editor Lin Orosz.
“There are many fine newspapers in our association serving communities in which they’re published. The staff at The Advance has as its goal providing readers and advertisers a consistently strong product each week that reflects the vibrancy of our community,” Orosz adds.
Newspapers in the Best Overall category are judged in 11 areas including community news, photography, advertising content, presentation, advertising design, local features, sports, classified advertising, production quality, front page and editorial page.
The Advance collected 817 out of 1,000 possible points. The Estevan Mercury placed second with 780 points while the Battlefords News Optimist finished third with 764 points. Besides being named Best Overall, The Advance won second place in the Best Front Page category.
Other newspapers topping their respective Best Overall categories were the Whitewood Herald in Class A for papers with circulations under 2,000; the Meadow Lake Northern Pride in Class C for papers with circulations between 3,500 and 6,499; and the Lloydminster Meridian Booster in Class D for newspapers with circulations above 6,500.
